One thing, though–I don’t think you meant to say that competence & enthusiasm are “mutually exclusive”; “mutually exclusive” means that the two things are incompatible, which doesn’t seem consistent with the rest of what you’re saying. I assume that you meant that they can exist independently of one another–and I *completely* agree with you on that point.
