Dear Editor and other colleagues, I like to appreciate your initiatives and creativity in coming up with an e-version of the Five laws of Library Science, originally propounded by D R Ranganathan.

However, I feel we need to appropriately interprete and correctly adopt the originator's idea if the e-version is to be a true replication of Ranganathan's laws. To this end, I wish to suggest that the e-version should read as follows:

1. EBooks are for use.

2. Every reader his or her eBook.

3. Every ebook, its reader.

4. Save the time of the e-book reader.

5. The library is a growing organism.

Thank you.

Hi, I've translated to catalan your post, at my LIS student's blog. Your updated Ranganathan is a very interesting attempt, I'd like to spread it where I do live.

Lately, I've been quite paranoid about a future without the current production of printed books ... if everything would be electronic, the control chances increase ... but I guess this is another topic.

(Hope that wordpress.com pingback will work, if not, I'll trackback it anyway. I could'nt found any license statement about derivative works like a translation, so if it's not allowed, please let me know, and I'll remove it ASAP.)

In regards to #4, our library will be getting a new software called Summon from Serials Solutions. I haven't gotten to play with it yet (we won't have it for a few months) but from the demo we watched, it looks like checking out ebooks will be as simple as you described. Unfortunately, this software is geared towards academic libraries or large public library systems (it seems that way to me). So then the small public libraries with ebooks still won't be using it. But at least there are improvements on the horizon.
