I think it's a re-definition of quiet. Silence was golden, but with the other activities going on beyond reading, it is adjusting. I do know libraries that have quiet reading areas and enforce them, but I think it is a matter of appropriateness.

As I am also knee-deep in packing boxes (filling, not emptying), I feel a certain empathy toward you. How about a Thread on "pulling up stakes" in preparation for moving on, choosing what or whom to leave behind, and deciding what makes it through to the next round? Or even just the simple pleasure of leaving the old thought patterns behind: flushing the radiator, so to speak. Not to mention the challenges of keeping one's balance through the process .

I am an enthusiastic patron of my public library here in Northeastern Ohio. I was one of those somewhat misfit kids who volunteered in the library in high school, back in the (dinosaur?) days of the Demco notching charger.......the hours I spent filing date due cards and...... Well, anyway.

What I would like to know: What happened to the quiet public library? NOT silent, but quiet? Staff people are talking in "normal"-to-raised voices, there are the bloopings and bleatings of various mechanical devices, and worst of all....noisy patrons! True silence is not a realistic goal, but what happened to quiet?
