I’m not making comments on mental health issues. I’m talking about people who say that this tragedy could have been avoided if school prayer was allowed, the teachers were all armed, and/or video game and movie violence was curbed. This demeaning, throwaway attitude towards mental illness – and the lack of help, effective treatment and support – is a huge problem, and should be considered as much if not more than the major cause of a tragedy like this than just gun ownership.

I would hope that librarians would not consciously encourage ignorance. Please think twice before making such broad and cruel statement; someone you know may well be dealing with the pain, shame and sense of isolation that mental illness causes.
