Please re-read that passage. I'm not making comments on mental health issues. I'm talking about people who say that this tragedy could have been avoided if school prayer was allowed, the teachers were all armed, and/or video game and movie violence was curbed. These are people presenting personal opinions or baseless theories in order to explain what happened that correlates to their worldview. These are the nutjobs and wackadoos in question.

I don't often leave comments, but as the parent of a 'wackadoo' who struggles daily to fit in, to live a life worth something, I'd like to speak up in defense of people suffering various types of mental illness. This demeaning, throwaway attitude towards mental illness - and the lack of help, effective treatment and support - is a huge problem, and should be considered as much if not more than the major cause of a tragedy like this than just gun ownership.

I would hope that librarians would not consciously encourage ignorance. Please think twice before making such broad and cruel statement; someone you know may well be dealing with the pain, shame and sense of isolation that mental illness causes.
